Booms:Booms are an efficient way to clean up oil spills. Booms are temporary barriers that are used to prevent the spilt oil from reaching the shore.
Skimmers:Skimmers are machines that are used to separate a liquid from another liquid (in this case the liquids are oil and water). This tactic was used in the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
Burning:Burning is another way of coping with oil spills. Once oil is trapped in booms it can be burned to get rid of it. However, the downside to this is that burning the oil can create pollution.
Spray/Vacuum:Spraying and vacuuming the oil is a good way to collect the oil once it is on the beach. After the oil has washed up onto the beach workers have several options of how to dispose of it. You can either spray it off with hoses, vacuum it off, or even shovel the oil up into barrels.
Dispersants:Dispersants, when used correctly can be an effective way to clean up an oil spill. As the diagram depicts, dispersants are added to the surface of the water, causing the oil to form into droplets, and the small droplets disperse from the oil. All that is left is a thin layer at the surface.
